Greetings and happy spring from all of us at the Switchboard. Let me start by highlighting the amazing success of our March 9th Carnivale event at the Historical Thatched Cottage. What a party! Thank you to everyone in the community who put on their colorful masks and came to play! It was a most successful event because of you! To the donors big and small, there are no words to express our gratitude for your continuous support. Many of you are old friends and have been with us for the past 21 years and some of you are newly acquainted with the GLSB of LI but everyone who participated is most deeply appreciated! What an exciting evening: the fabulous masks that ranged from simple and dignified to colorful and outrageous; the great party music by DJ Spindetta (we want her back); the wonderful ambiance of the Historical Thatched Cottage, and the sold out seating thanks to all of the community who loves a great party. Once again, on behalf of all the volunteers. we thank you!
In other news, a heartfelt thank you to the Long Island Ravens for once again benefitting GLSB of LI amongst several other LGBT volunteer organizations with a generous grant donation at their 20th Anniversary Dance. Our Outreach program, spotlighting visits with Gay Straight Alliances at local high schools and colleges, continues to grow with the dedcation of volunteer Suzin at the helm. Also we are getting ready for another Pride season. Look for us at the Long Island Pride Parade in Huntington Village on Saturday, June 9th. Finally, the fall is far off but we have already started planning our annual Rainbow Elephant Sale fundraiser. Stay tuned for details in coming months.
We continue to emphasize our ongoing need for phone volunteers. It is a unique way to give back to the community and work with a thoughtful and friendly group of people. Many people do not realize two aspects about volunteering with GLSB. One, you do not have to possess counseling experience. We are peer counselors, which means supportive listeners, and we fully train new volunteers for this role. Secondly, with the expected commitment of just two shifts per month, the requirement of your time is relatively small. If you are interested in volunteering, click on the “Contact Us” link at the top of this page, and tell us your name and contact information.
Finally, please be reminded that donations are appreciated and welcome. Checks should be made payable to GLSB of LI and mailed to our PO Box 1312 Ronkonkoma NY 11779. Thank you in advance for your generosity.
Sincerely with respect and pride,
Joan Bloodgood
